Indian Universities

A lot of students after doing their 12th grade in India also look to do undergraduate studies here and maybe go abroad for graduate studies. So, I thought I would dedicate this blog to providing information about Indian universities and write about the whole process of applying to college and the general timeline of admission.

To start off, most universities in India only accept the marks you score in your 12th grade board exams and a general test in your subject. Such as, for architecture, universities consider 50% of your average mark in the 12th board exams and 50% of your score in NATA. Only some universities have their own entrance test, like IIT, IISc, NIT, etc.

I would suggest researching about your university or a range of universities at least a year before applying, so that you can find out what tests you will have to write, and start preparing for them.

Then, when you have been preparing for the tests for at least 7-8 months, the time will come for you to apply. Application process differs from college to college, but, say for admission in 2021, the general timeline is like this :

August - September, 2020 - Start your research. Decide on what course you would like to take and learn about the tests you will have to write.

October, 2020 - Start preparing for your tests specifically, while also studying for your 12th grade board exams.

January, 2021 - Apply to the colleges you wish to go to. Application process details are different for different universities, so be sure to check out their websites. Some universities also require a personal statement, so if your college requires one, get started on it, and perfect it by the time you have to apply.

February - March, 2021 - Write your 12th grade final exams.

April - May, 2021 - Central tests like NEET, NATA, JEE mains, JEE advanced are conducted as well as tests for certain subjects like CLAT (common law admission test) for Law.

Certain colleges will conduct their own tests as well during this time. These colleges usually provide admission based on the scores in the test they conduct and don’t take into account board marks.

June, 2021 - Results are announced for the tests that were taken. Colleges will start approving your application.

July, 2021 - Narrow down your choice of colleges and decide on the one you would like to attend. Confirm your admission.

August - September, 2021 - First term will start.

This timeline is not applicable to all colleges. This is just an indication as to how the general university application timeline looks.

My next article will be about application details to universities in certain countries.
