India or Abroad?

Hey guys, for my first article, I thought I’d address the most elementary question all of you will have, which is, whether you should study in India or in a different country.

This is indeed an important decision to make, because those 3-4 years will pave the way for the rest of your career. Thus, it is extremely important that you study in an appropriate environment that will mould you and prepare you for your choice of career.

Now, there are many factors that come into play while making this decision. Some of the most important are:

1) Finances (course fees and living expenses)

One of the main aspects of education you will have to consider is finances, this includes course fees and living expenses.

Truth be told, education is much cheaper in India as compared to the educational hotspots of the worlds like UK, United States and Paris. Course fees per year as an international student in UK is around 30,000 pounds, which is approximately 30 lakhs in Indian rupees, so for a four year course, it will exceed one crore rupees.

Apart from this, the cost of living and daily expenses like cost for grocery and rent is much less in India than most of the places abroad.

Thus, much more expenses will be incurred abroad than it will in India.

Of course, there are many financial aid programs like bursaries and scholarships that are available based on academic, sports and dramatic accomplishments. But these are very hard to receive, to say the least.

But, you can definitely try your luck!

2) Courses

Most universities abroad offer a lot of courses and even some courses that are not available in India.

But, if you want to take a course such as law or philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) and so on, it would be advisable to study in India. Subjects like these, when taught, are country oriented. For example, taking law in the US will not be the best course of action, if you are not sure as to which country you want to practise law in. Same goes with PPE as well.

So, depending on your choice of subject, you should decide on studying in India or abroad.

3) Accommodation

This not a problem in some cases, but most universities offer accommodation only for the first two years and students generally have to find flats or apartments for the remaining years of study, usually with other students of the same or different universities.

So, before you make a decision, consider the university’s accommodation details.

4) Proximity to India (or your home country)

This is not a requirement per say, but it is something to consider and will definitely be advantageous in certain situations, such as the situation we are in right now.

If being close to your country (or far from it) is important to you, be sure to factor that in.

5) Language

For those of you considering countries where English is not the widely spoken language, you have to take some classes over the summer, because, although the medium of teaching will be English, it will be very difficult to communicate with the locals, and everyday activities will prove to be a hassle.

Thus, I would recommend learning the basics of the national language of that particular country.

These are the most important things to consider, according to me, when deciding whether to study in India or abroad.

There are many other aspects that you will come across when you do your research, but I hope this article has given you a broad picture of what to consider, while making this decision.
